Chapter 14

Kat

The next day, we were up early, eating breakfast and helping with chores before heading to church. To no one’s surprise, my parents decided Alex would come with us. Mom went back up to the attic and picked out some nicer clothes from Adam’s stash for him to wear.

We both sat in the back of Dad’s pickup. It was weird, like we were kids. Our eyes met, and nervous butterflies swarmed in my stomach.

The previous day, after our family dinner with the ranch hands, Alex had gone straight to bed at Mom’s insistence. My parents had told everyone they were retiring and going to bed, too. It made sense, because Dad had stayed up all night yesterday. Cole had asked again if we could talk, and I’d told him I was busy writing. I’d gone back to my room and stared at the computer, feeling hyped up and nervous about trying to write a stupid book while an attractive guy was sleeping in Adam’s room. Finally, I’d gone to bed early too.

We pulled into the small white church’s parking lot. How many times over the years had we come to church just like this, only Adam had been with us, too? My eyelashes fluttered, but I pushed away the thought. I’d made it through his death day, and I didn’t want to be a wreck today. I needed to focus on church and getting ready for the cattle drive.

I hadn’t anticipated that everyone at church had already heard about the mysterious guy staying with us. People kept coming over to talk to us before church officially began. Pastor Will made a point of welcoming Alex and telling him he hoped he would enjoy his time here. The biggest surprise was when Steve Starks, his wife Marissa, and two of their daughters, Sonya and Tanya, came up to us after the message and acted like they knew Alex. Alex hated the attention, and his cheeks burned red as he talked to Steve’s daughters, who were overly affectionate.

What was the story there?

After church, as we headed back to the ranch, I asked him, “Do you know the Starks family?”

He nodded. “I’ve done some land deals with Steve.”

Before I could ask him any further questions, my mom started talking about the sermon Pastor Will had given. For the rest of the way home, I felt funny, like I was missing something.

Dinner was uneventful. My family and Alex engaged in a long conversation about the ranch, the cattle, and how much my dad expected to get from the cattle drive. It was regular ranch talk, nothing I hadn’t heard before, so I dismissed myself and went to my bedroom.

I sat in front of the computer and once again tried to write. Nothing was coming to mind, so it was almost a relief when I heard a knock at my door. “Come in.”

My parents walked inside. “How is the writing going?” Mom asked, sounding overly chipper as she sat on the bed.

Dad pulled a chair over and sat on the other side of me.
